Volunteers in the Gardens
Charlottesville Va Parks and Grounds

Volunteer at City Hall

Who can help?

Anyone who has the desire.  We invite experienced gardeners and beginners to help us keep Charlottesville's flower gardens beautiful.

We will share our knowledge and skills with the beginners and we invite the experienced gardeners to come and share their knowledge with us!

Whether you are young or old, a city resident or a county resident, you can help.  Please consider giving us a hand.

Volunteer!

Just give us a call at (434) 970-3558 and we will be happy to send you an application.  As soon as we organize our group of volunteers, we will all gather together and discuss our plans for the gardens.

How does it work?

We will furnish all tools and supplies.  All you need to do is show up.

We will never ask you to apply any pesticides or chemicals except fertilizer.

You can set your own hours and amount of time that you are willing to contribute.  If the garden you have volunteered to maintain proves to be more than you can handle, you can simply turn it back over to us.

Where are the Gardens?

Downtown Mall
More than 60 pots of annuals that are maintained and replanted each Spring, Summer and Fall.

City Hall Area
In and around City Hall and the City Hall Annex.  Mainly shrub beds with three small flower beds.

Greenhouse
At the Parks office at 1300 Pen Park Road (photo).  March through June is the busy time in the greenhouse.  There would always be a staff member working with you in the greenhouse.

Lee Park
Across from the Central Library.  Several small beds of mixed annuals and perennials.

Jackson Park
Downtown beside the Albemarle County Courthouse.  Six flower beds plus grandiflora roses in this park.

Due to safety concerns, we must limit areas where volunteers can work.

Why?

The bottom line is that we need your help!  We can no longer depend on tax dollars alone to keep the city parks beautiful.  But there is another reason.  These are your flower beds and your neighborhood parks.  You deserve a chance to share in the excitement and satisfaction that come with tending them from day to day.

Who benefits?

Everyone!  You get a chance to give back to the community and become involved in your area's flower gardens.  We get a chance to concentrate on areas most in need of maintenance.  Everyone is a winner!
